Preserving Our History: Faith, Fire, and Resilience at San Francisco Central Church
For more than 134 years, our church home has stood as a beacon of faith and community in San Francisco. Maintaining a historic structure in this unique coastal environment requires constant stewardship. The salty air, dense fog, and relentless ocean winds create severe wear on our building’s exterior. In response, our dedicated facilities team routinely monitors the campus and plans necessary upgrades. A central focus of this maintenance is our building's exterior featuring soft Arizona sandstone. Because this stone is naturally porous, moisture from San Francisco’s fog and rain causes it to absorb water, expand, contract, and eventually crack or flake. Following professional consultations with seismic engineers and restoration specialists, the decision was made to refinish and seal the sandstone to secure the facade and protect passersby.
On June 29, 2026, work was well underway on this restoration project. While contractors were working on waterproofing reinforcement around the exterior windows, a heat application involving a propane torch accidentally ignited the exposed wooden framing. Recognizing the danger immediately, the contractors called the San Francisco Fire Department, and emergency crews arrived within minutes.

Despite the prompt emergency response, environmental conditions proved challenging. A stiff early afternoon wind blowing from the west quickly fueled the flames through the historic wooden framing. Over 100 firefighters responded from multiple fire stations across the city. Crews launched a massive defense, utilizing advanced technology and traditional firefighting tactics:
- Aerial & Drone Response: Drones provided real-time aerial imagery to target hot spots, while four separate high-reach aerial ladders deployed heavy water streams over the roof and through upper windows.
- Interior Operations: Multiple firefighter teams moved inside the structure with ground ladders and high-pressure hoses to suppress internal flames.
- Perimeter Containment: Crews stationed around the exterior sprayed water directly into windows and doorways to halt horizontal fire progression.
Despite these extraordinary efforts, the fire caused catastrophic structural damage. The church’s roof collapsed, and the main sanctuary, balconies, and interior ministry rooms were entirely destroyed.
Amidst the devastation, there is immense gratitude: no community members, contractors, or firefighters sustained injuries, and crews successfully prevented the fire from consuming adjacent properties. We remain profoundly grateful for the swift action of the San Francisco Fire Department and give thanks to God for protecting human life and that no other structures were burned.
The path to recovery, however, extends beyond our own doors. The intense fire, falling debris, and emergency suppression efforts caused secondary damage to surrounding neighbors—including impacted roofs, falling bricks, and water runoff affecting nearby homes and a local business. As our community looks ahead to rebuilding, our immediate priority remains supporting our surrounding neighbors and restoring the sanctuary that has served San Francisco for well over a century.
Our Sincere Thanks to First Responders and City Leaders
We express our profound gratitude to the San Francisco Fire Department, emergency medical services, and law enforcement personnel whose brave, swift actions prevented the fire from spreading further into our neighborhood.
We also wish to extend our appreciation to our local leaders and civic partners—including Supervisor Stephen Sherrill, Mayor Daniel Lurie, and the various departments at San Francisco City Hall—for their compassionate support, guidance, and swift coordination during this challenging period.
Looking Ahead: Rebuilding and How You Can Help
In response to the two questions we receive most frequently from our congregation and community:
- Will we rebuild? Yes. SF Central Church is more than a physical structure; it is a vibrant spiritual home. Our structural engineers, restoration specialists, and insurance adjusters are working directly with San Francisco city officials to develop a comprehensive plan to rebuild our church campus for generations to come.
- How can you support? We welcome your prayers, encouragement, and financial contributions as we embark on this rebuilding journey.
