| Dear Friend,
He
that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide
under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, “He
is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust.”
We trust our family, and we trust our friends. In everything
we come in contact with, there is a measure of trust. I trust
my truck; otherwise, I wouldn’t get in it and drive at
65 mph down the interstate. I trust it will get me to work on
time. I trust the food I get at the store. I trust my roof will
not hit me in the head as I sleep.
But when trust is broken, it can be a shaking experience. When
my truck breaks down on the Bay Bridge, it’s not a happy
time. When a friend lets me down, it hurts. And the hurt comes
from a broken trust.
How can I trust? Especially after I have had my trust broken
time and time again? How can I trust God like the Bible says—to
trust Him will all my heart?
The secret lies in our verse, found in Psalms 91:1, 2.
When I spend time with the Most High in His secret place, He
gives me trust. When I stay close to the Almighty—so close
His shadow is right over me—then I will rest. And I will
rest in perfect trust.
What does it mean to “dwell in the secret place of the
Most High”? It is simply prayer. It’s the time that
you spend each day alone with God, with no one else around.
It’s the time you spend as you drive down the road with
the radio off, just talking to God. It’s talking to God
silently just before you have to make any decision.
The way to the throne of God is always open. You cannot always
be on your knees in prayer, but your silent petitions may
constantly ascend to God for strength and guidance. When tempted,
as you will be, you may flee to the secret place of the Most
High. His everlasting arms will be underneath you. In
Heavenly Places, page 86.
We come to God by special invitation, and He waits to welcome
us to His audience chamber. The first disciples who followed
Jesus were not satisfied with a hurried conversation with
Him by the way; they said, “Rabbi, . . . where dwellest
Thou? . . . They came and saw where He dwelt, and abode with
Him that day.” John 1:38, 39. So we may be admitted
into closest intimacy and communion with God. “He that
dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide
under the shadow of the Almighty.” Psalm 91:1. Thoughts
from the Mount of Blessing, page 131.
Have you spent time with the Most High in His “secret
place” today?
