182 Christ Is Alive

182 Christ Is Alive

Our Hymn of Praise is a modern hymn, Christ is Alive, written specially for the Easter season by Brian Wren. Wren wrote it immediately after the assassination of Martin Luther King, and had the problem of the death of Christians and the need for a resurrection clearly in his mind. He wrote it to the music of the tune, TRURO.

TRURO was written in 1789 by Thomas Williams, and is used in our SDA hymnals for two other hymns, Go, Preach My Gospel and Jesus Shall Reign Where'er the Sun.

Christ is alive!
Let Christians sing.
His cross stands empty to the sky.
Let streets and homes with praises ring.
His love in death shall never die.

Christ is alive!
No longer bound
To distant years in Palestine,
He comes to claim the here and now
And conquer every place and time.

In every insult,
rift, and war
Where color, scorn or wealth divide,
He suffers still, yet loves the more,
And lives, though ever crucified.

Christ is alive!
Ascended Lord
He rules the world His Father made,
Till, in the end, His love adored
Shall be to all on earth displayed.
