169 Come, You Faithful

169 Come, You Faithful

Our Hymn of Praise today is one of the oldest Christian hymns in present use. It is Come, You Faithful, #169 in our hymnals. It was written in Greek, by John of Damascus, in the early 800s. He wrote it as a canon, and based the first ode on the Song of Moses recorded in Exodus 15:13. The last stanza is a doxology to the Trinity.

The tune, ST. KEVIN, was composed specifically for these words in 1872 by Arthur Sullivan. The tune is named after an Irish hermit who established a monastery in the Vale of Glendalough, about 618 AD.
