142 Angels We Have Heard On High
142 Angels We Have Heard On High
"Gloria in excelsis Deo," or "Glory to God in the hightest,"
is a direct quote from the earliest recorded Christian hymn of praise,
voiced by the angels who appeared to the shepherds announcing the birth
of Jesus: "Glory to God in the highest" (Luke 2:14).
The French traditional melody, GLORIA, has always been wedded to this
test. The arrnagement is by Edwin Shippen Barnes (1887-1958).
Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o’er the plains,
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains.
Refrain
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your heavenly song?
Refrain
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Come to Bethlehem and see
Christ Whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee,
Christ the Lord, the newborn King.
Refrain
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
See Him in a manger laid,
Whom the choirs of angels praise;
Mary, Joseph, lend your aid,
While our hearts in love we raise.
Refrain
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
