11 The God of Abraham Praise

11 The God of Abraham Praise

ur Hymn of Praise today is The God of Abraham Praise. It is taken from the Yigdal, which is sung in synagogues on the eve of festivals and of the Sabbath, and in Jewish homes at family worship time on Friday evening. Thomas Olivers translated it from the medieval Hebrew of Moses ben Maimonides, and gave it a decidedly Christian flavor. Nearly every line echoes a Scripture text.

The tune is LEONI, named after Rabbi Leoni, who was a cantor at the Great Synagogue in London. It has an unusual 6.6.8.4 Doubled meter.
