4 Praise, My Soul, the King of HeavenOur Hymn of Praise this morning is #4, Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven. Please take a minute to look at it now, because it is in a different format than usual in our hymnal. You might notice that the tune is the same for all four verses, but there are three different harmonies. The only thing to "watch out for" is to get the verses right. We sing the verses in order, one through four, like we usually do, but note that they are not arranged in a four-deep stack as most of our hymns are. The hymn is a paraphrase of Psalm 103. Henry Francis Lyte wrote it in 1834 for his parish church at Lower Brixham, Devonshire, England. The Psalm says, "Bless the Lord, O my soul!" which Lyte has changed to "Bless, my soul, the King of Heaven!" Other popular hymns by Lyte in our hymnal are Abide With Me and Jesus, I My Cross Have Taken. The tune, LAUDA ANIMA (Latin for Praise, My Soul) is by Sir John Goss, in 1869. He wrote four settings for it, our hymnal uses three of these. Of special interest is that this hymn was used as the opening processional hymn for the wedding of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in 1947, as her mother had used it for her wedding to King George VI.
