2 All Creatures of our God and KingThe Hymn of Praise today is All Creatures of our God and King. William Draper wrote this splendid free paraphrase of St. Francis of Assisi's Canticle to the Sun. It reflects the intense love of nature and nature's God, that characterized this founder of the Franciscan order (and after whom this city is named!) In the blazing heat of the summer of 1225, at the end of his life, blind, St. Francis lay in a straw hut at the San Damiano Convent, where the field mice ran over him constantly, leaving him no rest. In these circumstances he wrote this hymn. The tune, LASST UNS ERFREUEN, is built altogether on a single musical unit of four notes, by imitations and inversions. It's a remarkable example of economy of structure, and of the accumulating force of repetition.

Grace Notes was a joint production of the late Minister of Music, Steve Gungl, and former Pastor John Duge. It relies heavily on The Companion to the Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal and The SDA Digital Hymnal.
